Starting September 8th, Grace will begin having an evening service the second Sunday of the month. After a potluck at 5 PM in the Fellowship Hall we’ll gather in the Worship Center from 6-7 PM for a time of praise, prayer, and hearing from God’s Word.
As we read in Acts 2:42, the early church “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” Our evening service is designed to give time to each of these important activities and to aid us in our mission to make disciples who glorify God in all that they do.
Here are four reasons we have chosen to add an evening service:
First, it is our desire to gather together as a congregation for the purpose of corporate prayer, which will occupy a significant portion of our evening service. In corporate prayer the body is united in a desire to seek God’s will and bring our requests to Him.
Secondly, we recognize that “faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17). In our increasingly secular world, it is essential that we take measures to strengthen our faith. By adding another opportunity for us to gather with fellow believers, seek the Lord in prayer, and hear from His Word we are taking advantage of God’s primary methods for increasing our faith.
Thirdly, teaching is an essential aspect of the duties of an elder, and we want them to be able to teach from God’s Word more regularly. Additionally, having more preaching opportunities gives us the ability to better train up other men for Gospel ministry.
Fourth, we believe that the service, coupled with the meal that precedes it, will deepen relationships within our church body. By joining together for both physical and spiritual nourishment, we have yet another opportunity to grow in our love for one another here at Grace.
How Does The Evening Service Differ From The Morning Service?
- Our time together begins with a meal in the Fellowship Hall at 5 PM
- As mentioned above, the service will have a greater emphasis on prayer
- The sermon series will be separate from the series in the morning service
- We will have the opportunity to hear from a wider variety of teachers
- Childcare and children’s classes are not available during the evening service
- Our evening gatherings will be shorter, planned to last one hour
